Torn, 2024, 150 x 150 cm, Patched fabric on cotton

This tapestry, pieced together from scraps of old children’s clothes, bedsheets, dishrags, upholstery, and curtains, depicts the perpetual struggle of women torn between familial responsibilities and societal expectations. It challenges the notion that women can 'have it all,' illustrating the ongoing sacrifice and choice that women face in their everyday lives.

We were sold a lie when we were told we could ‘have it all’. This piece is a testament to that. Women are constantly torn between the two realms, where society makes them choose and sacrifice one for the other, resulting in it never being enough. Having kids and being a stay at home mum is never deemed as ‘work’, and choosing a career over motherhood will always go amiss, causing us to be perpetually torn.
