Al Umm, 2024, Embroidery on wicker and wire mesh

Reflecting on my childhood and the profound influence of my mother, this piece forms a personal journey of reflection upon my matrilineal heritage.

A small inherited chair and footstool frame, adorned with a line from the Holy Quran, celebrate the selfless and thankless role of mothers. The wicker seat, cross-stitched with 'Al Umm' [The Mother], invites her to figuratively rest and expand the heavens beneath her feet where the stitched footstool quotes the Holy Quran “Heaven is beneath the feet of mothers”.
