Will Not Protect Against Drowning, 2025, 150 x 123cm, plastic on fabric.
Will Not Protect Against Drowning depicts a rubber dinghy standing isolated, afloat, against a sea of darkness.
The dinghy is patched using a collection of infants’ lifesaving armband floats which, ironically, say ‘Will not protect against drowning’ in numerous languages.
This bold, bright, textured piece presents as playful and innocently infantile, but upon closer inspection delivers a more sinister message of the treacherous journeys migrants desperately take to cross the Mediterranean sea, on similar dinghies, with babies and young children, whose lives have been lost and that tragically were not protected against drowning.
